I see this so often when coaching, even more experienced gym-goers...
We're all here for the big PBs, that extra 5kg on a lift, that rush!
But what we're missing is the more fundamental (+ important) wins.
When starting exercise we experience something called Nervous Inhibition - fancy talk for "our muscles not really knowing what to do" - quite literally our body not knowing what/where to send signals to move!
In my experience, this only lasts around 2-3 sessions before our bodies begin to "wake up"+ movement becomes more coherent so to speak.
This is something to celebrate.
Next up is posture! We all pick up some sort of postural deviation from our numerous bad habits (driving, sitting, even walking!). Naturally this is one of the first things to combat when training new clients.
Depending on severity I can notice a dramatic change in 2 sessions - deviations can cause very real symptoms (hip impingement, sciatica, even headaches + migranes!). So look for fixing or improving posture.
This is something to celebrate.
Finally, something we probably don't notice...Mindset. It's the little things when it comes to mindset, the comments "I can't lift that, I'm so unfit etc" - This is how it often starts out, but as I watch people's pessimism toward themselves evolve into "I'll give it a go!" or "I CAN do that" I feel a sense of achievement as we cultivate an innate knowing of "I've bloody got this."
