Choosing the right gym

The gym can be scary, going to a new gym...very scary indeed!

With so much choice out there & every single one claiming they're the best, how do you choose the right gym?!

Having travelled the world & been to hundreds of different gyms, sometimes a new gym every week, I've got a little list for you guys when it comes to picking a gym.

What we want:

  • Varied, high-quality equipment - a good gym should have something for everyone. Open space to move, good machines, free-weights, equipment to stretch, cardio rooms.

  • Clean facilities - the gym floor & the bathrooms should be sparkling! Gyms can be filthy places if not looked after properly.

  • Friendly staff - Gym staff should be there to help you first & fore-most. Free inductions, a gym tour & pointing you in the direction of an experienced PT if you need.

  • Good atmosphere - there is SO much to be said for the vibe of a gym. You HAVE to be comfortable, a good gym will have a relaxed atmosphere that makes you feel like you belong there.

What we don't want:

  • Hazardous or old equipment - The gym is an inherently dangerous place, we're dealing with heavy weights! Old, broken equipment is highly dangerous & if it's not been dealt with, it says something about the gym overall...

  • Poor lighting - Now this is a weird one, but important! Poor lighting can be disorientating (& terrible for your photos) - in todays modern world, we want that natural light!

  • Poor ventilation - We don't just want that cool AC breeze, poor ventilation in a gym can actually be dangerous. High levels of CO2 in the gym can have detrimental affects on us, especially when we work out!

  • Judgy vibes - If you feel like you're being watched, you won't enjoy your gym time! Feel a gym out before you sign up. Try a taster session & see how you feel.
